Body Ventures

On Tuesday, Body Ventures visited Hesston Elementary. Our class split up into 3 groups and toured throughout different parts of a giant body. In each part there was an adult that talked to the kids about ways to stay healthy, how the body works, and what happens to your body if you don't keep it healthy.

The Mouth: After discussing food groups, the kids headed inside the mouth, where they got to sit on giant teeth and see the giant "hangy ball" (also known as the uvula). Inside the mouth they learned ways to keep our teeth and gums healthy.

Nurse Tammi shows what teeth and gums can look like after exposure to tobacco.

The Intestine: We then traveled to the large intestine where we learned how long it is (2o feet) and what it does with our food. The things hanging from the ceiling are villi that move nutrients to the blood.

The Lungs: Next we went into our lungs where we got to see real lungs--a pair of healthy, pink lungs and a pair of gray, unhealthy lungs. We also felt what it was like to breathe if you have emphysema, a disease you can get from smoking.

After the lungs we finally traveled to our bones, muscles, and skin.
