One of our read alouds this year was
Storm Runners: The Surge by Roland Smith. It takes place in Florida, where a boy named Chase and his dad follow storms. This book ignited a lot of conversations and questions about hurricanes.

In fact, there were so many questions it was taking us quite awhile to get through the book. So, I finally had the students write down any questions they had about hurricanes. By the end of that 30 minute reading session, these were the questions they had:
My next step was to collect informational texts about storms so that students could research the answers to their own questions.
Finally, I wrote out their questions from their sticky notes so that they could answer any questions they found the answers to.
