Scientific Method

For the past few weeks, we have spent our science time reviewing and practicing the scientific method.  There are 6 steps-

  • Question
  • Hypothesis
  • Materials
  • Procedure
  • Observation
  • Conclusion
The kids have also learned a sentence using the first 6 letters (QHMPOC) to remember the 6 steps.  Ask them and see if they can remember the acronym to help them remember!

The first experiment we did to study the scientific method was if you could fold a piece of paper in half more than 7 times.  They made a hypothesis, wrote down the materials they needed, and then wrote down their conclusions.

The second experiment was a marble grab.  They had to make a hypothesis about which person from their team would be able to grab the most marbles in one hand.  They recorded the materials, procedure, what they observed (which includes their numbers and data), and the conclusion (if their hypothesis is right or wrong).

Our final experiment was trying to figure out which brand of popcorn pops the most kernels.  We used 5 different brands
  • Jolly Time
  • Orville's
  • Kroger/Dillon's
  • Target
  • PopSecret

Each person made a hypothesis about which brand would pop the most based on weight, how it felt, or what they already knew about the popcorn.  Then we recorded our materials and procedure.

On Thursday, the students each got a different kind of popcorn and counted in groups of ten until their popcorn was gone.  It took a lot of self-control to keep the popcorn on their towel instead of in their mouths!

Then, they recorded how many pieces they each had to find their total.

Finally, we found out which brand popped the most.
  • Jolly Time - 438 kernels popped
  • Orville's - 366 kernels popped
  • Kroger/Dillon's - 454 kernels popped
  • Target - 389 kernels popped
  • PopSecret - 370 kernels popped.
For the second year in a row, Kroger/Dillon's has popped the most (it was also the cheapest!).
