For more scientific method practice, we did an experiment about various paper towels. Our goal was to find out which paper towel was actually the strongest. Commercials always claim that they have the best and strongest paper towel, but we wanted to find out for ourselves!
The first day of our experiment, students got a stack of 7 towels. They were labeled with different letters and the students did not know which brands the paper towels were. They looked at the towels, felt them, and tugged on them in order to make their hypothesis about which paper towel they thought would be the strongest and hold the most weight.
For the experiment, each group poured 20 milliliters of water on the paper towel. They then put gram pieces on the paper towel until the paper towel ripped. Some paper towels were so strong that we ran out of weights and had to start adding metal washers. After their paper towel ripped, they recorded how many grams and washers their paper towels held. (Sorry no pictures! Too busy finding weights for everyone!)
The next day they needed to figure out their data. They met with their groups again to figure out their total amount of weight. They also had to use multiplication to figure out how much weight in washers they had. The small washers weighed 3 grams and the large washers weighed 15 grams. They then added all of their totals together.
We found that Bounty Durable was the best brand for strength. It held the most weight, followed closely by Viva.
