We spent the day going to 7 different classes, having lunch, and learning about various things concerning the water cycle, water conservation, and water aquifers.
Class #1- Edible Aquifers (not sure how our class got "lucky" enough to eat these at 9:00 am). The presenters talked to us about the layers of earth under the ground and how wells work to suck up water to provide us with water.
Class #2- Water Off a Duck's Back- We learned about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and how the oil spill affected the wildlife and water in the Gulf of Mexico.
Class #3- Gooey Garbage- We learned how landfills are made and what happens when certain materials are not recycled and when the plastic lining of landfills are punctured.
The kids add "gasoline" (mustard) to their landfills.
Mary and Brendan pull out their landfill to see what has happened to their aquifer after the lining has been punctured.
The kids checking out their polluted aquifers.

Making it "rain" and, therefore, causing run-off of the hazardous waste.
Elizabeth tests the groundwater to see if it is safe for drinking (it wasn't)!
Class #4- Water Magic- No pictures! Ask your kiddo about the magician. I still can't figure out how he got that boy's shoe in the box!
LUNCH! Free and delicious!

Class #5- Kitchen Chemistry- A professor from McPherson College spoke to us about acids, bases, and neutrals by using pH paper. He then showed how bases and acids can neutralize each other. Then he showed us how to make something bubble up and explode using basic kitchen ingredients. I will apologize beforehand (there were several scurrying to write down the ingredients)! Many of the kids are now looking forward to learning more chemistry.

Class #6- Enviroscapes- We learned about how hazardous chemicals (such as gasoline, oil, fertilizer, and herbicides) can wash from our yards and businesses and wash into fresh water sources in our community.

Class #8- Water Around the World- No pictures available--however, ask your child about how much water on earth is salt water and how much is fresh, drinkable water.
